Back in May of this year, Alicia Keys declared she would be going without makeup in a Lenny Letter. Her words speak poignant truth about the quest for perfection that women feel. If Alicia Keys, the beautiful, talented, successful, influential Alicia Keys can feel the pressure that society puts on women, what woman can’t? Her decision to go makeup free rocks my world, and not because I hate makeup, but because it’s a way for a prominent woman to be and show who she truly is. This isn’t completely about makeup; it’s about being who she ideally is. For that, I say: THANK YOU.
I’ve been guilty more often than I’m proud to say of striving for perfection (you can read about all that here). Covering up and conforming stifles true beauty both inside and out. A few nights ago at the VMA’s, Alicia Keys attended and performed without wearing makeup. Check out how gorgeous she is:
What I love about this picture is yes, she is physically beautiful, without a doubt. But aside from her physical beauty, I’m struck by how I feel like I am really looking at her, at Alicia, not some made-up, costume-y, decked-out-for-the-VMA’s, scantily-clad character. This is a human being standing in and living her truth.
People being who they are, embracing themselves down to their core inspires me to do the same.
Do you know what Alicia Keys said about her experience being photographed without makeup?
“I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt.”
Now that is more refreshing than a Zico after Bikram Yoga.
What do you think of Alicia Keys going #nomakeup ?
